Website tip #5-08 (website statistics)
One of the questions we are often asked is "how do I know how many people have come to my website?" The simple answer is to look on your website administration page. There is a count of the number of times that the home page has been viewed. This will approximate the number of visitors that you have had. Of course, since you also go to your own home page, then number is not exact. As far as that goes, any statistic will always include your activities.
Another product that we use is a traffic monitoring service from WebSTAT, Inc. You can find out about them by visiting their website at http://www.webstat.com.
They have two versions - a free one (and this is the one that we recommend that you use for your WebCubic website). They also have a fee-based product that you can use. WebSTAT accumulates all of the data that is needed. When you install the "free" product, you get only some of the statistics that are available. If you pay the current fee of $9.95 for the premium service, you get more statistics.
Since they change their instructions from time-to-time, here is a simple overview of how you implement these statistics:
- go to http://www.webstat.com and signup for the free product
- you must copy some code from their website that will be pasted into your WebCubic website.
- go to the administration area of your WebCubic website
- Click “Edit Personal Information”
- Scroll to the end of “Your Profile” area
- Enter "[br]” followed by pasting the generated code copied above (replace the brackets with the corresponding less-than or greater-than symbols)
- Click “Update”
You have completed your setup. When you go to your home page, you will see the WebSTAT logo. Statistics are being collected and can be viewed from your WebSTAT account.
To view your WebSTAT statistics
- Login into your WebSTAT account
- Using the “Report Menu” you can view your statistics
