Protect your computers

With the recent assault on computers by the W32 class virus, we have been forced to seek new ways to block such risks.

Century 21 publishes a flier that their REALTORS mail to prospects on their mailing lists. In the most recent issue there is an article on "Protecting Home Computers".

Here are some key thoughts:

- Windows and broadband Internet connections are at most risk
- Don't open suspicious e-mail attachments (we've been saying this for a long time)
- Be wary of free software on the web unless it is from a reputable company
- Install anti-virus software and check for updates to "virus definition files" regularly (we've been saying this for a long time)
- Use a home firewall which prevents unauthorized access to your computer by blocking data ports

It is important to understand that most firewall protection schemes will block INbound access to your computer. But you also need protection to block OUTbound access. It is this second protection that will prevent unauthorized data from being sent OUTof your computer.

One of the better and inexpensive software products that does a great job with prevent unauthorized OUTbound access is ZoneAlarm. You can find out more by visiting their website at http://www.zonelabs.com
