Website tip #5-29 (search engine)
FOURTH in a series on search engine optimizationHTML "meta-tags" are used to specify characteristics about the website. Some are more important than others. There are three of them that are more interestng than the others.
TITLE. The TITLE tag is used as the text appearing at the top of the browser window. Search engines regard this tag as important when determing search engine ranking placement. You should place your primary keyword phrase at the beginning of the TITLE tag.
DESCRIPTION. Although the DESCRIPTION tag does not influence search engine ranking, a well written description may very well encourage a "click thru" to your site. Currently WebCubic websites use a generic description based on your content. In our next release, you will be able to write your own DESCRIPTION tag.
KEYWORDS. The KEYWORD tag contains a variable number of keyword phrases. In the past, this tag influenced search engine ranks, but more recently it has not. Most search engine experts recommend that you use your desired keyword phrases. This may have an influence on some minor search engines and possibly in the future, search engine algorithms may change.
Use your TITLE tag now to optimize your website for your primary keyword phrase. For now, there is not much you can do. In the near future, you will be able to populate both the DESCRIPTION and KEYWORD tags. DESCRIPTION will be important, not for search engine rank, but for "click thrus".
