Commentary on mobile websites

It is understandable to assume that the major challenge for a mobile website is how to duplicate the content of the Internet website on a mobile website. But this is not the case. The two are different and the approach is different, too.

Determine what is important on a mobile web surfer

People surfing the mobile Web are usually interested in a company's most basic information. They want contact information, address, directions and a summary of the services they provide. For example, the mobile version of a restaurant website should have location, telephone numbers, map, perhaps a menu. That's it. Forget about the background of the restaurant and the historical significance of the building where it's located.

Simplify the navigation for the mobile web surfer

Link to specific with the fewest clicks as possible. The homepage could just be a series of links to other information. Mobile users want basic information quickly.

No need to have a lot of graphic images for the mobile web surfer

Graphics enhance the desktop web experience. File sizes should be small. Dimensions should be small to fit properly.

We'll discuss more another time.
