Domain name solicitations

One of the situations that many of our clients encounter and become victims is what we call "domain name solicitations". Immoral domain name-related companies solicit domain name owners in such a way that owners accept their offers.

Some of the common ways include:

- a few months before your domain name is due to expire, they will send an email to you informing you of this. They offer to transfer your domain name from your current registrar to them for a fee and will renew your domain name for one year for free.

If your domain name was registered by WebCubic, we will automatically renew your domain name for you at our current rates. This will be less expensive than the solicitation offer. We use Domain People and Register.com to register domain names in behalf of our customers. These are among the most reputable registrars in business today.

- they will offer you a one-year subscription to provide an annual search engine submittal to hundreds of search engines.

This is not necessary. WebCubic will submit your domain names associated with your websites. Typically we do so shortly after you acquire your website from us and again immediately after we assist you with your search engine optimization. No additional re-submittals are needed. The Big Three (Google, MSN, and Yahoo) will automatically visit your website from time-to-time for search engine purposes.

- they will tell you that they can protect your domain name so that it will always be owned by you even if your web hosting company is acquired or goes out of business. Then they will offer to transfer your domain name to another company for a fee.

WebCubic purchases your domain name if you wish. When we do this, we register the domain name showing you as the owner of the domain name. We list ourselves as the technical and billing contacts. In the normal course of business we will manage your domain name and renew it for you. In the unlikely scenario that we are acquired, the domain will remain registered to you. You will not lose it, unless, of course, you do not pay for the next renewal. As long as you remain a WebCubic customer, we will handle this for you.

Please note our comments associated with each of they mis-leading offers. Some offers will be legitimate but please check with us before you accept any offer. We can at least inform you whether the offer is legitimate or mis-leading. If the solicitation is deceptive, then likely their services will always be suspect. Don't become a victim.

One final note, if you register the domain name on your own for use with your WebCubic website, you own that domain name. There is no reason to accept a solicitation in these cases either. Companies like GoDaddy are honorable and reputable.
